specifyの語源と覚え方
覚え方
speci は「見た目・種類」、fy は「作る・なす」。どの種類か、どれのことかをはっきり決めてしまうことから、「指定する・明示する・具体的に述べる」になった。
曖昧な候補をそのままにせず、条件や対象をはっきり限定するのが specify。Specify the size. なら、大きさを一つに絞って言えということ。
「具体的な一点を指し示す」と覚えるとよい。specification（仕様）や specified（指定された）も、情報を明確にした状態を表す同族語である。
