ラテン語 dēfīniō = dē-（きっちり）+ fīniō（区切る）。「言葉の意味の境界線をきっちり引く」が原義で、そのまま「定義する」になった。輪郭を describe するのではなく、外との境目を引くのがポイント。

fīniō（区切る）の一族は final（区切り＝終わりの）・finish（区切りを付ける→終える）・confine（境界内に収める→制限する）・infinite（境界のない→無限の）。fin を見たら「境界・区切り」。
