「轟く・雷鳴がする」を表す語から出た家族。ゲルマン語側は thunder としてそのまま残り、thunder・thunderous・thunderstorm・thunderbolt・thundercloud・thunderclap・thundershower・thunderstruck が並ぶ。北欧神話の雷神の名から金属の thorium が命名され、thunderbird のような合成語もこの系列。

ラテン語 tonō（雷鳴がする）を経たのが ton で、detonate・detonation・detonator（轟かせる→爆発させる）、intone・intoned（声を響かせる→朗唱する）がある。スペイン語を経由した tornado も同じ語からとされ、荒れる空という原義が残る。

面白いのは、雷に打たれる比喩が「驚かせる」に定着した ston と stun の系列。astonish・astonished・astonishing・astonishment はもとが「雷で打ちのめす」で、その短縮形が stun（気絶させる）、そこから stunned・stunner・stunning（雷のような→見事な）が出た。stunning の褒め言葉としての強さは、この語源を知ると腑に落ちる。ギリシャ語の大声の武将の名から stentor・stentorian（朗々たる）、オランダ語の「雷の筒」から blunderbuss も入っている。
