stun（気絶させる・驚かせる）+ -er（〜する人・もの）。stun は *(s)tenh₂-（雷鳴を轟かせる）や *sten-（うめく）に連なり、大きな音で頭がくらくらする方向の語。
英語では「美しさで人を打ちのめすほどの相手」を stunner と呼ぶのが定番の用法で、形容詞 stunning（息をのむほど美しい）も同じ。驚きの強さが、そのまま賞賛の強さになっている。
