woman は古英語 wīfmann（女性）にさかのぼり、wīf（女）+ mann（人）という組み合わせからできた。ここでの mann は人間を表す語で、全体として「女性の人」を指した。現代では成人の女性を表し、結婚しているかどうかには関係しない。
単数の woman に対し、複数は women。綴りでは後半の a が e に変わり、発音では前半の母音も変わるので、one woman と two women を声に出して一組で覚えるとよい。成人女性を表す語と、その不規則な複数形を結び付ければ、妻をいう関連語 wife との意味の違いも整理できる。
