古フランス語 surprise は、super-（上の・超えた）+ prendere（つかむ・捕らえる）という構成で、「上からつかまえる」イメージをもつ。予期していない相手を急に捕らえることから、「予期せぬ攻撃・急襲」へ発展した。
そこから、思いがけず人の心をつかむ出来事や、そのときの感情を表す「驚き・驚かせる」になった。prendere の由来とされる *gʰed-（見つける・つかむ）を手がかりに、surprise は不意に相手をつかむことと覚えるとよい。
