a1の語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 ān（一つの）から。強く読めば one、弱く添えれば a／an と分かれ、数の「一つ」が、特定しない「ある一つの」を指す冠詞になった。日本語の「ある」に当たるのがこの用法。
母音の前でだけ an が残るのは、ān の n が子音の前で落ちたため。one・once・alone（all + one）も同じ ān の系統で、a の中には今も「一つ」が入っている。
