覚え方
verse はラテン語 vertō（回す・向きを変える）で、ad は「相手のほうへ」。こちらへ向き直って正面から対する advertō から生まれた語で、同じ方向ではなく向かい合う、つまり「反対の」が芯。
向かい合うものは進路をさえぎるので、結果を悪いほうへ向ける「不利な・逆効果の」になった。adverse effect（悪影響）のように使う。
reverse（向きを逆にする）と同じ verse を見たら「向きを変える」。adversity（逆境）も同じ流れにある。
