ラテン語 appāreō（現れる・見えてくる）= ad-（〜へ）+ pāreō（現れる・従う）。「こちらの目の前に出てくる」が原義。
英語では「現れる」「〜に見える」、さらに法廷や公の場に姿を見せる「出頭する・出席する」。このページの「出席」は、姿を見せることがそのまま出席にあたる使い方。appearance（外見・出現）・apparent（目に見える→明らかな）が同じ仲間。
