ラテン語 arbitratio に対応する形で、英語としては arbitrate（裁定する）+ -ion（行為・結果の名詞）と読める。中立の第三者が双方の言い分を聞いて結論を出す「仲裁」。

労使交渉・国際取引・スポーツの紛争などで使い、binding arbitration（拘束力のある仲裁）が典型。話し合いの橋渡しをするだけの mediation（調停）と違い、arbitration は裁定を下して当事者を従わせるのが要点。

arbiter（裁定者）・arbitrator（仲裁人）・arbitrary（恣意的な）と同族で、arbitr- は「裁定」。
