atavismの語源と覚え方
覚え方
フランス語 atavisme（先祖の形質の再現）を取り込んだ語。もとになったラテン語 atavus は「はるか前の代の先祖」で、その中に avus（祖父）が含まれている。
-isme（英語の -ism、状態や現象を表す）が付いて、「何世代も前の特徴がふいに現れる」現象、つまり「先祖返り」。生物学の隔世遺伝のほか、比喩的に「時代錯誤な先祖返り」も指す。
av の部分が「祖先」、-ism が「その現象」と分けて読むとよい。形容詞は atavistic（先祖返り的な）。
