ギリシャ語 αὐστηρός（渋い・厳しい） から。もとはワインや果実の、口の中が乾くような渋みを言う語で、*h₂sews-（乾く）に遡る。「舌が乾く渋さ」が出発点。

その渋さが人や暮らしに移り、甘さや飾りを削ぎ落とした「厳格な・禁欲的な」、住まいや様式の「そっけない・簡素な」になった。名詞形 austerity は個人の質素さのほか、国家の「緊縮財政」を指す。

severe が「程度がきつい」なのに対し、austere は「余分がなく飾らない」という色合い。an austere room（簡素な部屋）、an austere expression（にこりともしない表情）。
