フランス語 avalanche（雪崩） をそのまま借りた語。山の斜面に積もった雪や氷、岩が、いちどきに崩れ落ちる現象を指す。

比喩では「一気に押し寄せてくるもの」で、an avalanche of emails（メールの殺到）、an avalanche of criticism（批判の集中砲火）のように使う。「上から一気に、止められない量が落ちてくる」という映像がそのまま比喩になっている。

発音はフランス語式が残り、語尾は「〜ンチ」ではなく /-ɑːnʃ/「〜ンシュ」に近い。同じ現象を指す landslide は土砂崩れで、比喩では選挙の圧勝を表す。
