覚え方
de（下へ）＋scend（登る）で、上り下りの動きに「下へ」の向きを与えた語。よじ登る動きを逆向きにして「下がる・降りる」になった。
頭だけが違う ascend（上がる）と対にすると、綴りも意味もまとめて整理できる。階段でも飛行機でも、高い所から低い所へ移っていく動きが核にある。
上から下へたどる動きは血筋にも重なり、descendant は「下ってきた人」＝子孫、descent は「下降」から「血統・家系」へ広がった。be descended from ~ で「〜の血を引く」。
