ラテン語 blandus（快い・こびるような）から。人当たりのよさを表す語で、英語でも初めは「穏やかな・優しい」だった。
そこから角の無さが物足りなさの側に傾き、今は味が「淡白な・風味がない」、話や人柄が「当たり障りのない」。bland diet は刺激の少ない食事、a bland smile は何も語らない愛想笑い。blandish（おだてる）には元の「こびる」が残っている。
