carnalの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 carnālis（肉の・肉体の）= carō（肉）+ -ālis（〜に関する形容詞をつくる）。「肉体に属する」が原義で、spiritual（霊的な）の対として使われた。
そこから「肉欲の・性的な」という含みが強まり、carnal desire（肉欲）、法律用語の carnal knowledge（性的関係）のように、かたい語・古風な語として残っている。
carō の系統には carnivorous（肉食の）・carnage（殺戮）・chili con carne（肉入りの唐辛子料理）があり、carn- は「肉」。
