覚え方
古英語 ċēce（頬） をそのまま受け継いだ語で、顔の側面を指す。体の部位を表す古い語らしく、比喩の使い道が広い。
イギリス英語では「ずうずうしさ・生意気な口答え」の意味が強く、have the cheek to do（ずうずうしくも〜する）、What a cheek!（なんて厚かましい）のように使う。顔を突き出して物を言う姿から生まれた意味だと考えるとつながる。
慣用句も多い。cheek by jowl（すぐ隣り合って）、turn the other cheek（もう一方の頬を向ける＝報復しない）、tongue in cheek（冗談めかして）。形容詞は cheeky（生意気な）。
