覚え方
chill（冷やす・冷える）+ -er（〜するもの） で、熱を奪う機械＝冷却機・チラー。空調や工場の設備で、水や液体を冷やして循環させる装置を指す。
chill の背景にある *gel-（冷える・凍る） は cold（冷たい）・cool（涼しい）・congeal（固まる）・glacier（氷河）と同じ系統。gel / col / chill の並びを見たら「冷たさ」と読める。
もう一つの用法が「ぞっとさせる作品」で、a spine-chiller（背筋の凍る話）と同じ発想。「冷やすもの」という一つの原義から、機械と恐怖物語の両方が出ていると考えるとつながる。
