ドイツ語 Chromosom から。ギリシャ語 χρῶμᾰ（色）+ σῶμᾰ（体） で、文字どおり「色づく体」。
細胞を染色すると、核の中に濃く染まる糸状の構造が見えた。それを「色のついた小体」と名付けたのがこの語で、遺伝子を担う DNA の束を指す。
σῶμᾰ の芯 *tewh₂-（膨らむ）は「ふくらんだ塊＝体」。soma（体）・psychosomatic（心身の）・ribosome（リボソーム）と同じで、-some は「体・小体」と読める。
