chum（親友）+ -y（〜の性質の） で「親しげな・仲のよい」。くだけた話し言葉で使う語。
be chummy with ~（〜と仲がいい）のように使うが、文脈によっては「やけになれなれしい・近すぎる」という含みも出る。a bit too chummy with the regulators（規制当局と親密すぎる）。
chum 自体が「相棒」で、呼びかけの Hey, chum も同じ。-y は性質を表す形容詞を作る語尾（sleepy、chatty）。
