ラテン語 circus（円・輪・競走場）に由来する語。古代ローマで戦車競走を行った細長い円形の競技場が原義で、そこから円形の演し物の場＝サーカスになった。
曲芸師や猛獣使いの一座が丸いリングで演じるのが circus。転じて騒がしく秩序のない場面も指し、a media circus（過熱した取材騒ぎ）、This place is a circus（ここは大混乱だ）のように使う。
イギリスでは円形の広場の名にも残り、Piccadilly Circus が有名。circ は「輪」で circle・circuit と同じ仲間。
