colloidの語源と覚え方

フランス語 colloïde（他の物質に細かく分散した物質）= colle（のり・にかわ）+ -oïde（〜の形をした）。英語では -oid（〜に似たもの） で終わる語のひとつで、「にかわのようなもの」が原義。
化学では、溶けきってはいないが沈みもしない微粒子が分散した状態（コロイド）を指す。牛乳・霧・ゼリーが典型例。
-oid の背後には *weyd-（見る） があり、「そう見える形のもの」という含み。asteroid（星のようなもの）・humanoid（人のようなもの）と同じ作りだと分かると読みやすい。
