cotton（綿・木綿）+ mouth（口） という見たままの複合語。意味が二つあるが、どちらも「口の中の白い綿」から来ている。
一つは北米産の毒蛇ヌママムシ。威嚇するとき口を大きく開き、その内側が綿のように白いことからこの名がついた。
もう一つは口語の「口の渇き」で、口に綿を詰めたようにねばついて乾く状態を指す。緊張・脱水・薬の副作用などで起こる。白く乾いた綿の手ざわりを思い浮かべれば、二つの意味が一つにつながる。
