cutthroatの語源と覚え方

cut（刃物で断つ）+ throat（のど）。文字どおりには「のどを掻き切る」で、名詞では「人殺し・残忍な人」を指した。
そこから形容詞として「情け容赦のない」になり、今いちばんよく目にするのが cutthroat competition（食うか食われるかの熾烈な競争）。ビジネスや受験の話で定番の言い方。
動詞＋目的語で人や物の名を作る古い型で、pickpocket（すり）・breakwater（防波堤）と同じ作り。トランプの三人勝負も cutthroat と呼ばれる。
