詳細な語源ツリー

ギリシャ語 δενδρῑ́της（木の・樹木状の） から。中身は δένδρον（木）+ -ῑ́της（所属や出身を表す） で、英語でも dendr-（木）+ -ite と分解できる。

神経細胞から枝分かれして伸び、他の細胞から信号を受け取る突起が「樹状突起」。鉱物学では、岩の割れ目に木の枝のような模様を描く結晶を指す。dendr- を見たら「枝分かれした木の形」と読めばよい。

補足: rhododendron（シャクナゲ）・philodendron（フィロデンドロン）も同じ「木」の要素を含む。信号を送り出す側の長い突起は axon（軸索）で、対になる用語である。
