ラテン語 aequinoctium（昼夜平分時・分点）= aequus（等しい・平らな）+ nox（夜）+ -ium（抽象名詞を作る）。「夜が昼と等しくなる時」が原義で、春分・秋分を指す。
the spring equinox（春分）・the autumnal equinox（秋分）のように使い、太陽が赤道上を通る日である。夏至・冬至の solstice と対にして覚えるとよい。
nox は nocturnal（夜行性の）・nocturne（夜想曲）と同族、aequus は equal・equity・equator と同族。equi-（等しい）+ nox（夜）という分解を思い出せれば、綴りの -nox も落とさない。
