古英語 flint（火打ち石） が綴りも意味もほぼそのまま残った語。打ち合わせると火花の散る、硬く緻密な石を指す。
flint and steel（火打ち石と打ち金）、flintlock（火打ち石式の銃）。ライターの発火石も flint と呼ぶ。石器時代の道具の材料としてもおなじみである。
硬さと冷たさから比喩が生まれ、flinty は「冷たく厳しい」、a heart of flint は「情に動かされない心」。「打っても砕けない硬い石」というイメージを押さえる。
