iridescentの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 īris（虹）+ -escent（〜になりかけている）。「虹になりかけている」が直訳で、見る角度によって表面の色が移り変わる様子を指す。
シャボン玉・貝の内側・油膜・玉虫の羽根のように、色そのものではなく「色が動いて見えること」が iridescent の中身。日本語の「玉虫色」に近い。名詞は iridescence。
同じ īris からは目の虹彩を指す iris、花のアヤメの iris も来ている。iris＝虹→色とりどりでひとまとめにできる。
