古英語 īsern（鉄）から出た iron の -ing 形。金属の名が、鉄で作った道具の名にもなった。
衣類のしわを伸ばす道具を iron と呼ぶのは、熱した鉄の塊を使ったから。その作業が ironing（アイロンがけ）で、ironing board はアイロン台。
ゴルフのアイアンも同じ語で、鉄製のクラブを指す。皮肉の irony とは無関係。
