ラテン語 magnēs(磁石)を受けた語。鉄などを引きつける物体そのものを指し、そこから 人や物を引き寄せるものという比喩にも広がった。
a magnet for tourists(観光客を引き寄せる場所)、magnet school(生徒を広く集める公立校)のように、比喩の用法は現代英語で盛んに使われる。
派生は magnetic(磁気の・魅力的な)・magnetism(磁気・人を引きつける力)・magnetize(磁化する)。引きつけるという一点で、物理の意味と比喩の意味は完全に重なっている。
