植物の学名 Magnolia（モクレン属）から来た語で、これは フランスの姓 Magnol + -ia（人名などから属名をつくる）。植物分類に貢献した人の名を属名にした、いわゆる献名だ。

つまり 中身は人名であって、「大きい」という意味ではない。magnificent や magnitude の magn- とは無関係なので、そこだけ勘違いしないようにしたい。

英語では花や木の名のほか、やや黄みがかった白という色名にも使う。magnolia paint は内装で定番の色として通じる。
