覚え方
meta-（後に・超えて・変化）+ phase（周期の一段階）。細胞分裂で染色体が中央に整列する段階を指し、prophase（前期）→ metaphase（中期）→ anaphase（後期）→ telophase（終期）と並ぶ。
phase の背後には *bʰeh₂-（光る・現れる）があり、「表に現れて見える相」が原義。月の満ち欠けを「相」と呼ぶのも同じ発想である。
同じ *bʰeh₂- の系統に phenomenon（現れるもの→現象）・phantom（幻）・fantasy（幻想）がある。ph- で「現れる・光る」と読むと、専門語も見当がつく。
