nineの語源と覚え方

古英語 nigon（九）を受け継いだ、英語の基本数詞のひとつ。間の g の音が落ちて現在の形になった。
派生語の綴りに癖がある。序数の ninth だけ e を落とし、nineteen（十九）・ninety（九十）は e を残す。e が消えるのは ninth だけと覚えておけば書き間違いが減る。
慣用句も多い。dressed to the nines（めかし込んで）、on cloud nine（有頂天で）、a nine-to-five job（九時五時の勤め）。数そのものより句で出会うことの多い語である。
