古フランス語 oignement にさかのぼり、元は ラテン語 ungō（油を塗る）+ -mentum（行為の手段や結果を表す語尾）。さかのぼる *h₃engʷ- も「油を塗る」。
「塗るためのもの」が字義で、皮膚に塗る軟膏を指す。同じ ungō から来た anoint は、王や司祭の就任で聖油を塗ることを表す語。
a fly in the ointment（軟膏の中のハエ）は「せっかくの物事を台無しにする小さな難点」という成句。unguent（塗り薬）も同じ系統。
