古フランス語 cresme（クリーム） から入った語。この cresme 自体が、ラテン語 crāmum（クリーム） と chrīsma（油を塗る儀式） の混ざった形とされる。乳の上に浮く濃い脂肪の層と、儀式で体に塗る聖油とが、「とろりと塗り広げるもの」として重なった。
さかのぼる *gʰrey-（塗る・擦りつける） がその感覚を支えている。cream は「塗り広げられる濃い層」と捉えると、hand cream（ハンドクリーム）のような塗る用法まで一続きに理解できる。
補足: the cream of ~（〜の精髄・最良の部分）は、乳の一番よい部分が上に浮くことから。英語では色名 cream（淡い黄白色）にも使う。
