ラテン語 reminīscor（思い出す）= re-（再び）+ minīscor（思い出す）+ -scō（「〜し始める」動詞を作る）。「心に再び浮かんでくる」という作りで、英語では昔のことを懐かしく語る「回想する」になった。

minīscor の奥は *men-（思う・考える）で、mind（心）・mental（心の）・mention（口に出す）と同族。men を見たら「思う・心」。

reminisce about old days のように前置詞 about を伴うのが普通。
