side（脇）+ bar（細長い部分）から、本文の脇に置く囲み記事や補足欄を表す。長い記事の横に、用語解説や人物紹介が小さくまとめてあるのが sidebar。中心の文章を読み進めながら、必要に応じて横の情報に目を移せる配置を思い浮かべると分かりやすい。
ウェブサイトやアプリでは、画面の左右にあるメニューや補助情報の欄にも sidebar を使う。Open the sidebar. なら「サイドバーを開いて」。紙面の囲み記事から画面上の領域まで、共通するのは主な内容の脇に置かれた補助的な部分という役割である。hide the sidebar とあれば、その脇の欄を隠して中央の表示領域を広くする操作だと読める。
