覚え方
古英語 stiġrāp（あぶみ）にさかのぼる。前半は stīgan（上る）に関わり、後半は rāp（綱）で、「上るための綱」という作りをもつ。馬に乗るとき、足を掛けて体を持ち上げる道具の名である。
put a foot in the stirrup は「鐙に足を掛ける」。鞍から下がった輪に足を置くと、乗るときも乗っている間も支えになる。上る動作と、足を支える輪を組にして、現代語 rope との語源的なつながりも覚えられる。
