中英語 thorny = 古英語 þorn(とげ)+ -iġ(名詞から形容詞を作る)。現代英語の thorn + -y にそのまま対応している。
バラやサボテンの「とげの多い」が基本で、そこから比喩で「厄介な・扱いにくい」。a thorny issue(やっかいな問題)は定番の言い方で、触ると痛いという感覚がそのまま残っている。
þ は後に th と綴られるようになった古い文字。-iġ は現代の -y で、rainy・dusty・stony と同じ語尾。
