throughput は through「通り抜けて」と put を、input「入力」や output「出力」にならって組み合わせた語。「処理量、単位時間当たりの処理能力」を意味する。装置や工場に入ったものが、途中の工程を通り、処理を終えて出ていく流れに目を向ける。
工場が一時間に何個の製品を処理できるか、通信システムが一秒にどれだけのデータを送れるか、といった量が throughput の例だ。high throughput は処理量が大きいこと、increase throughput はそれを増やすこと。一つの品物が何秒で出てくるかだけでなく、一定時間に全体でどれだけ通せるかを考えよう。入口から出口へ流れる品物を数える図が、意味を覚える手がかりになる。
