trop はギリシャ語で「転回・向きを変えること」、ic は「〜に関する」。太陽が空を移る高さがここで折り返す、というその線を指して、tropic は「回帰線」、二本の線に挟まれた地帯から「熱帯」を表す。
夏至と冬至に太陽が折り返す位置が目印で、the Tropic of Cancer は「北回帰線」。the tropics と複数形なら、その間にある暑い地域、つまり熱帯を指す。tropical fruit（熱帯の果物）と結びつけると、折り返す線と暑い地帯の両方を思い出せる。
