worse は古英語 wiersa（より悪い・劣った）から続く語で、bad「悪い」や badly「悪く」の比較級として使う。good → better と同じように、元の語に -er を付けるのではなく、別の形で比較を表している。
The weather is worse today. は「今日は天気がさらに悪い」、I played worse than yesterday. は「昨日より下手にプレーした」。get worse は「悪化する」となる。二つの状態を比べ、悪い側へ動くという関係を押さえれば、形容詞でも副詞でも読める。bad → worse → worst を一続きで覚えると、比較と最上級も整理しやすい。
