bad（悪い）+ -ly（形容詞から副詞を作る）。中英語の段階からある形で、まずは「下手に・まずく」（She sings badly.）。
もう一つ、程度を強める「ひどく・切実に」の用法が重要で、want・need・miss と結びつくと「悪く」ではなく「どうしても」の意味になる（I badly want it.＝どうしても欲しい）。badly は「下手に」と「切実に」の二枚看板と覚えておくと誤読しない。
