古英語 bindan（縛る）がそのまま現代の bind で、bind – bound – bound の不規則変化を保っている。un-（打ち消し）の unbind、re-（再び）の rebind と、接頭辞は動作の向きを足すだけで芯の意味は動かない。物理的に「縛る」から、契約が「拘束する」へ、さらに「本を綴じる」へと用途が広がった。
製本の枝がとくに語を増やしていて、binder（バインダー・製本業者）、bindery（製本所）、bookbinder・bookbinding が並ぶ。比喩の枝では spellbind（呪文で縛る）から spellbinder・spellbinding が生まれ、「魅了して動けなくする」という縛り方を表す。bindweed のような植物名や、束ねた帯を指す band まで含めて、「一つにまとめて動けなくする」が全体の芯にある。
