appeal（訴える・上訴する）+ -ing。直訳は「訴えかけてくる」で、こちらの心に働きかけてくるもの、つまり「魅力的な・好ましい」という形容詞になった。
人や容姿に限らず、an appealing idea（魅力的な案）・an appealing flavor（そそる味）のように広く使える。attractive が「引きつける」なのに対し、appealing は「訴えかけて心を動かす」という働きかけが軸。
目つきや表情に使うと元の意味が顔を出す（an appealing look＝すがるような目つき）。動詞 appeal が持つ「訴える／魅力がある」という二つの顔が、そのまま形容詞にも受け継がれている。
