attract（引き寄せる）+ -ive（〜の性質の） で「人を引きつける・魅力的な」。ラテン語 attractīvus（引き寄せる力のある）＝ attrahō（引き寄せる）+ -īvus と同じ作りをしている。

見た目の美しさだけでなく、条件や提案が「魅力的だ」と言うときにも使う（an attractive offer＝好条件の申し出）。物理では「引力の」という意味にもなる。

-ive は「そういう性質を持つ」。attract（引く）→ attractive（引きつける性質の）→ attraction（引きつける力）と、品詞の並びで押さえるとよい。
