bi-（二つの）+ polar（極の・両極性の）。対になる二つの極をもつ、という意味。
地球の南北両極のように、性質の異なる極が二つあって、その間で振れる状態を指す。bipolar transistor（バイポーラトランジスタ）は正負二種類の電荷を使う素子、bipolar disorder（双極性障害）は気分が高揚と抑うつの二極を行き来する状態。
bi- は *dwi-（二つ・二度）に遡り、binary（二進の）・bilateral（二国間の）・bicycle（二輪車）と同じ。bi- ＋名詞で「その要素が二つある」と読めばよい。
