bottom（底＝低いところ）+ land（陸地） で、川沿いの低く平らな土地。増水のたびに土が運ばれて積もるため肥沃で、農地になりやすい。
land は *lendʰ-（土地・原野）に遡り、もとは「開けた野」。ここでの bottom は谷底・川床に近い低みという地形の言い方で、bottom には「低地」の意味そのものもある。
主に米国で使う語で、bottomlands と複数形で言うことも多い。対になるのは upland（高地）。
