古英語 botm（底・最下部） をそのまま受け継いだ語。容器の底、海や谷の底、順位の最下位まで、「一番下」を広く指す。
the bottom line（決算書の最終行＝要するに肝心な点）、rock bottom（どん底）、from the bottom of my heart（心の底から）、bottom-up（下から積み上げる）と、比喩表現が豊富。
形容詞としても the bottom shelf（一番下の棚）のように前に置く。反対は top で、top-down と bottom-up は対にして覚えるとよい。
