覚え方
フランス語 centrifuge（遠心性の） から。中身は centri-（中心）+ -fuge（追い払う・遠ざけるもの） で、「中心から遠ざける」が原義。
高速で回して、重いものを外側へ振り分ける装置＝遠心分離機。血液や試料を成分ごとに分ける実験機器や、ウラン濃縮の遠心分離機を指す。動詞で「遠心分離にかける」とも使う。
形容詞 centrifugal（遠心の）と、対になる centripetal（求心の）をセットで覚える。-fuge の「逃げる・逃がす」は refuge（逃げ込む先→避難所）・fugitive（逃亡者）にも通じる。
